Congratulations on your upcoming event! Mooch would be honoured to be part of your happy memories. We have answered some of our most often asked questions regarding tiered cakes- from delivery protocols to how many servings to anticipate.
Do you have photos of your favourite cakes?
I’m planning an event but it isn’t for another year, is it too early to book my cake?
Since we focus on creating bespoke cakes, we limit the number of bookings to ensure each cake can be given the attention to detail it deserves. Often each cake is designed from scratch as we work with our clients to create their cake vision. With that being said, we book up quite quickly and far in advance! For Friday/Saturdays, long weekends, or popular months (March-September) we suggest you save your date with a deposit as soon as possible. A $75 non-refundable deposit secures your date and ensures our availability. We can always work out the details (design and size of cake) as numbers come in from your RSVP’s.
Will an all buttercream cake hold its shape for the duration of my event?
The simple answer: YES because we use an Italian meringue buttercream for all our fillings and decorations on the cake. This is the most stable of the different types of buttercream. Ask Megan to talk baking science to you, she’ll be happy to share!
The complicated one: It depends on the conditions of where the cake is being stored. Please avoid leaving our beautiful creations in direct sunlight. Cakes arrive chilled to ease with transportation and will come to room temperature while they add to the decor of your event. Our cakes are best enjoyed when the buttercream is at room temperature and cuts like soft butter-yum! We have set up cakes on some of the hottest Vancouver days, both indoors and outdoors and our cakes have sat out for the whole reception without any issues.
What sized cake do I need for my event?
It all depends on how much cake you’d like to serve. Our servings are by Wilton’s standard for weddings, which are 1″ by 2″- quite small. Servings of this size often work best for a multi-course meal and provide some flexibility in numbers if not everyone has a sweet tooth. Since the servings are small, I would advise to choose a cake that is close to your guest count as not all venues will cut the cake to Wilton’s standard sizing and often cut slices larger. Sheet cakes and cupcakes can always be added on to your cake order to make up the difference in numbers. Figure out the right size with our handy guide!
When will you deliver the cake?
Providing us beforehand with a day-of-timeline is very helpful so we can plan the best time to come and deliver your cake. There are many things to consider such as traffic, construction detours, and of course ambient temperatures, which all play a part in our delivery process. Generally we aim to deliver your cake before guests arrive. This way your guests can be wow-ed when they enter your fabulous fete!
Please inform us of the following: Where would you like the cake placed? Who is my point of contact at the venue? What is the earliest I can access the venue?
I have my own cake topper, can you add it onto the cake? How do I get it to you?
Absolutely! Please let us know and we can coordinate a time for you to drop off your cake topper to our studio. We’ll place it on your cake and ensure it is perfectly poised for your event.
I want the florals on my cake to match my bouquets, will you work with my florist?
We are happy to add florals to your cake. Just tell us the colour palette and we can go from there. The bulk of the florals will be provided by us, and either the day before your event or at the venue, we can place the florals from your florist on the cake to bring the whole look together.
